Are You A Reluctant Leader?

Einstein said that we can’t solve a problem by using the same level of consciousness that created it. I hear people ask: ’Are we just going to go back to normal. I am not sure I want to. So what do we do now?’

For a new level of consciousness to emerge in the world now, we need leaders who will inspire to new possibilities. To change the ways we treat ourselves, each other and the planet, we need leaders to create a new operating model. To build a more caring and sustainable world, we need leaders who will show us what that looks like.

So Where Are These New Leaders?

These new potential leaders exist but they aren’t showing up. Often they don’t see themselves as leaders. They wait for the cavalry made up of other people to come. Forgetting what is for them to do. Lulled into the false sense of security of the comfort zone, they lose the sense of urgency of our times. One day they think...

Or as we were discussing in one of our Academy calls recently, they do try, but lack the skills to be really impactful. Too loaded with hurtful past experiences, fear of rejection or judgement, it comes out more as rebellion and attack than evolutionary leadership.

A Desire to Change The World

Since I was a little girl, I knew I was here to change the world. I could glimpse this person I was meant to be. I used to play being her in my childhood games.

There was the visionary princess from another planet who was here to lead humanity to a better place. In my mind, I was leading a trail of people to this window of light and I was committed to making sure they would all get there. Being there for anyone who was struggling. So that no-one would be left behind.

There was the loving wisdom keeper. I would spend hours in front of the mirror in my room speaking to imaginary people. In my mind, I was on TV sharing new perspectives, educating on new ways and inspiring to new possibilities.

There was the insightful storyteller who would be doing a running commentary on my life as I lived it. The one who wanted to show how we could live life differently. And was willing to go first - so others didn’t have to. Living my own heroin’s journey and returning to tell the tale - even if it was just to the bottom of the garden (!).

There was the deeply compassionate medicine woman mixing healing potions for my dolls and teddies. And lining them up in this beautiful place in the garden to take care of them. To help them heal their hearts and soul. So that they got what they needed and could flourish.

Your Purpose Involves Leading

In hindsight I was metamorphically playing my purpose. But more than that I was practicing being a certain kind of leader - just not the kind of leader I knew. A strange combination of a visionary compassionate humanitarian heart turned evolutionary leader.

Funnily enough I was leading, but didn't see myself as a leader. More like a misfit who seemed to see things very differently to others. In real life, my experience was that when I shared, people would ignore, get annoyed or reject me.  So over time I learnt to not share, until I forgot what my voice wanted to say. So as to protect my own heart. 

If Not You, Then Who?

Yes I would complain about existing leaders. But not own that me leading was the answer.

At 12 years old I told my grandmother that I would not be working for her in the family hotel as expected. As I was not impressed by the kind of leader she was. Only years later did I realise she couldn’t be the leader I needed, because she didn’t know how. The qualities she was lacking were the ones I was meant to model to her. And I hadn’t stepped up. So how could she know anything different?

To be fair, I tried. But I didn’t have the level of self-value, compassion, consciousness or transformative skill I needed to have a real impact. I was still at the level of telling her what she was doing wrong and should be doing instead. I didn’t pick up on the regrets she did share because they didn’t fit my agenda. As a result the ways in closed. I also thought that it was my parents’ job to fix her. Sadly, she died without me being able to give her that gift of a new way.

A New Kind Of Leader

Later I learnt that my leadership was not to tick the box of the perfect leader, be a rebel, convince or be right. But simply to touch the world with my unique presence - my own particular flavour of love. To bring that strange combination of the visionary humanitarian princess, the loving wisdom keeper, the insightful story teller and the deeply compassionate medicine woman. To serve evolution by contributing my unique potential in a conscious, loving and intentional way. And coincidentally that was also my purpose.

I have always been a reluctant leader. As long as I tried to fit into the old paradigms of leadership, I resisted the call. But now I remember that if I don’t show up for my part, no-one else can.  That some things are simply only mine to be. And so everyday I ask myself ‘ if not me, then who?’
