Create The Road You Want To Travel

Sep 10, 2019

I was talking to my brother recently about one of his career turning points.

The Choice

He works for a global consultancy and was for a long time focused on being the good soldier and ticking the right boxes to become a partner.  But it seemed that that wasn't really getting him anywhere.

And then one day he asked himself what he really wanted from his career.

And he realised that he had a real entrepreneurial streak that wanted to create something new, take more risks and to contribute to something he really cared about.

So he stopped chasing partnership.  And instead started to make the contribution he really wanted.

He didn't leave his company.  Instead he expressed that he would like to build their education practice - the part of the business that serviced the education sector.  And bring a new approach and a new level of thought leadership to it.

Taking The Road Less Travelled

In that moment he decided to create the road...

Living My Calling - The Stories

Aug 01, 2019
The truth is that it took time for me to commit to my calling and right livelihood.
I thought it might help if I shared some of my ‘traveller’s notes’ on this... Just so you know that a ’reluctant’ student... can still find their way...
  • Something missing: As a lawyer I could feel something was missing.  I tried to dismiss that I was crying every morning going into work.  I put it down to a bit of stress.  And in parallel, beat myself up for not being tough enough/not having what it takes.

  • The Illness:  A lot of you know this story by now... but as a summary... I get sick and am told I will never walk properly again and will spend the rest of my life in crippling pain.  I realise through that experience that I am completely disconnected from who I really am and what is important to me .  That I am not investing in my real dreams or what I care about.  I...

The Conform Track or The Inspiration Track?

Jul 30, 2019

What I thought was ‘meant to be’ for me at 26 years old was working and playing hard. I was bright and capable and had worked hard to get to where I was.  I was ‘meant to be’ out there blinding everyone with my success.  And so why was I lying in bed crippled instead?

I recently watched a video clip by Christian Busch in which he said that the ‘why’ generation would change the world.  He argues that it’s by asking the question ‘why’ that we will change things.  I see his point.  In my case however it was the ‘what’ question that changed mine.

THE Question

As I lay in bed, I asked myself the question ‘What if I am never able to walk again, what will I regret?’

I was expecting the standard answer from my ‘meant to be’ world.  I was ‘meant to be’ a partner in a Law firm in the City in London.  Why else would I be...

Three Ways To Reconnect To You

Jul 27, 2019
I am looking forward to spending some time in my favourite place... the South of France.  It is a place where I disconnect from the world...the view helps (!) and I reconnect to myself.  I remember who I am, what I really want and what I want to put my energy in going forward.
It always starts with me getting back to daily habits that nourish me and help me listen in.
Here are three habits I use to reconnect:
1. Journalling:
What that is, is writing down your thoughts  for 20 mins at the beginning of each day.
Just literally whatever is going through your head at that time.  You include your thoughts, your emotions, your yearnings, your desires...
And over time you get clear about what is really going on inside of you. You can hear yourself.  You build a connection with your inner world - whatever it is up to on that day.
And from...

The Meaning Recipe

Jul 26, 2019

I see many people crave for more meaning at work. And think that to do that they need to work for an NGO or set up their own business.

The irony is that I have worked with NGOs and entrepreneurs. And often they feel disconnected from meaning too.  So if it isn’t ‘location’ then what is the recipe for meaning at work?

The core shift is this...  to understand that meaning is about your level of self-expression at work and your ability to influence your environment with it.

So the real question is not 'where do you need to go?'

But instead 'how can you nurture, express and realise your unique potential more? And through that have an impact that is positive and that you care about?'

Here are three ways to reintroduce meaning in your work right now:

1. Make it personal

Work becomes meaningless because we disconnect from ourselves in the process. We leave ourselves at the door.

We stop listening in to how we feel and what...

Are You Resisting Your Calling?

Jul 25, 2019
With a client recently we were talking about the dilemma of 'how do you earn a decent living and at the same time... answer the call to step up to create a liveable world for our kids?'.
And how tempting it is to just keep pretending we can do business as usual...
What Excuse Are You Using?
We have all been there.  We know that something is calling, but we are not really listening.  Or more accurately not wanting to hear.
Because we would then have to do something about it. And it would be scary, uncomfortable.  We would have to step out of our comfort zone, take a risk. Maybe even upset the people around us.
So we distract ourselves with other things.  Ending up super busy but not aligned to what we are truly here to do.
It is true that we often watch the state of the world feeling helpless, whilst at the same time just doing our best to pay the...

Stay Out Of Burn Out And Find More Energy

Jul 18, 2019
Staying out of burn out means changing the way you work.  Rest and nutrition can help. But the key is tackling the real issue which is your relationship to yourself and work itself.
What has most surprised me is that the current burn out epidemic is a ‘high performer’ disease.  Its roots lay in that you have been trained to perform but not to thrive.  So what has to change is the way you ‘do’ work.
In practice, staying out of burn out takes creating positive foundations for flourishing - rather than tittering on the edge of collapse.  It is about understanding what your true value is - nourishing it, contributing it, and supporting it in the best way.
Here are 3 ways to do that:
1. Energize Yourself
Imagine that you left your car on all the time.  Ultimately it would run out of fuel.  It is the same with you.  You need to fill up your energy...

Are You Too Busy For Legacy?

Jul 16, 2019

I remember when I was a lawyer that I used to spend most of my life in the office.

Often my mum would call me there.  I would tell her I was busy and that I would call her back.  The thing is I never did…

After I had done my re-conversion she owned up as to how much that had hurt.

When I used to teach resilience to lawyers, I would tell that story to stony faced high achievers.  They wouldn’t flinch.  But at the end of the session when I would ask what action they would take … it always involved making a phone call.

The Busyness Trap

Busyness has become a badge of honour, a sign of achievement.  It seems that everybody is overly busy and... exhausted.

At the end of last year, I decided I wanted to be less busy in my work.  I realised that there was a big difference between being busy and adding real value in a meaningful way.

With my clients the first and incredibly hard step seems to be to stop the busyness...

What Do You Truly Desire?

Jul 09, 2019
Desire, the power of desire, your relationship to desire.  Do you hear it? Do you lean into it?  Do you trust it? Do you follow it?  How would your life be different if you did?
As the holiday period approaches, it is a good thing to reflect on this... Because let's be honest that is the main time of year when your desires get an outing... so let's make the most of it...
What is desire?
The definition of desire is a strong feeling of wanting something.  It is that yearning that comes from deep inside of you.
It is not that grasping external needy feeling.  But that place within yourself that calls you deeper and to something greater.
Many schools of thought believe that desire is actually the starting point to living your true path.  Because they say that that is how your soul communicates with you.  That is how it sows the breadcrumbs back to your true purpose.

Purpose Is A Way Of Travelling, Not A Destination

Jun 28, 2019
People often ask me: ’How do I find my purpose in life?’
I tell them that purpose is not a destination, it is a way of travelling.  That it is not something for you to find, but someone for you to become. And that from there your purpose emerges....
What will you regret?
5 years ago, I found myself in a hospital bed being rushed into intensive care - with a suspected stroke.
As I said goodbye to my partner, I suddenly realised that this could be the last time that I would see him.  And the question came: ‘Louise, what will you regret?’
Something just clicked in my brain - a hidden trapdoor sprung open.    From which a ready-made checklist to assess my life emerged.  It came in the form of three questions:
1. ‘Have you experienced enough joy? The measure being 'have you done enough of what your heart truly wanted?’
2. ‘Are...
